Many characters have been inspired by Bluebeard and many historical figures have been either contemporarily called Bluebeard or retroactively named Bluebeard. Many of these characters merely share the same name as Bluebeard and are otherwise unrelated to the character created by Charles Perrault.
Giles de Rais was a knight and lord in the 1400s from Brittany (in modern France). He was a leader in the French army, and a companion-in-arms of Saint Joan of Arc. He was convicted of the crime of killing many children and later executed.
Much media has been made conflating Giles de Rais and the Bluebeard fairytale despite there being no evidence to suggest that Charles Perrault was inspired in any way by Giles de Rais, in fact the historical account of Rais and the story of Bluebeard have very little in common besides the fact both are of French origin and both killed people, however Rais (if guilty) killed children (perhaps for the purpose of dark magic) while Bluebeard killed his wives in a test of distrust. Some media follows more closely the Bluebeard tale but decide to either name their Bluebeard Giles de Rais or to merge the two together in a strange blend, therefore despite my adamant belief that Rais and Bluebeard are unrelated, their connection in the social consciousness cannot be avoided when exploring media, especially that of a Japanese origin as it seems evermore present there.
Below is information about various characters loosely inspired by or merely named Bluebeard with nothing else in common except the name. They stand here as a means of acknowledgment, proof that I am aware of their existence, despite them having nothing to do with my Bluebeard.
